Across every industry, organisations are striving to reduce their environmental impact while maintaining critical business goals such as productivity, efficiency, financial performance, employee safety, and social responsibility.

In this article, we highlight how some of our customers are making sustainability a core part of their materials handling strategies.

Logistics Holdings Australia

Logistics Holdings Australia (LHA), part of the Singapore Post Group, is a leading supply chain and logistics provider committed to reducing site-level emissions as part of its sustainability agenda.

“As part of our commitment to sustainability, we've made the decision to replace our core fleet of LPG trucks with lithium-ION battery-powered trucks,” says Stephen Carroll, LHA’s General Manager – Strategy.

Following a comprehensive tender process, LHA selected Linde Material Handling for its advanced range of electric solutions.

“We really liked Linde’s products for electric vehicles,” Carroll adds. The new fleet of lithium-ION counterbalance forklifts delivers:

  • Up to 30% greater energy efficiency compared to lead-acid batteries
  • Fast-charging capability for minimal downtime
  • Maintenance-free operation
  • Consistent performance, even at low charge levels

The equipment upgrade has been supported by Linde’s FleetFOCUS fleet management solution, enabling enhanced visibility, resource control and operational efficiency.

Fonterra

For New Zealand dairy leader Fonterra, sustainability is non-negotiable. The farmer-owned co-operative, which ships over 300,000 tonnes of product during peak periods, has set an ambitious goal: a 50.4% reduction in emissions by 2030. Transitioning to an all-electric forklift fleet is a key enabler, but not without challenges. “Many distribution centres were originally built for minimal power use, making electric charging station installations difficult,” explains Bruce Hansen, National Fleet Manager at Fonterra.

To overcome this challenge, Fonterra is trialling Linde’s Connect Charger at its Clandeboye site. This intelligent system optimises energy usage by prioritising which forklifts charge first, ensuring seamless operations without costly infrastructure upgrades.

“What we’ve seen so far is really positive, and it’s likely we’ll install more systems across our sites. It’s a perfect fit for our application.” Today, over 60% of Fonterra’s 600+ forklift fleet is electric, and both Fonterra and Linde are committed to advancing sustainability through innovation, automation and safety.

Inkwell Wines

Green credentials matter in every industry but especially in food and beverage. For Inkwell Wines, South Australia’s first Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) vineyard, sustainability goes beyond compliance, it’s part of their DNA.

As a pesticide-free vineyard, Inkwell Wines has embraced clean energy across its operations, replacing LPG forklifts with electric alternatives. For the past five years, the winery has relied on a Linde E20 Series 386 electric forklift, reducing its carbon footprint while maintaining performance and efficiency.

Linde’s lithium-ION technology offers zero emissions, rapid charging, and uncompromising reliability, proving that sustainability and productivity can go hand-in-hand.

Moving Forward Together

These successes, along with countless others across Australia and the globe, demonstrate what’s possible when organisations with shared values partner for impact.

“For Linde, sustainability is not just a check box on a customer RFP,” says Allan Spackman, Technical Solutions Manager at Linde Material Handling Australia. “Our strategy creates lasting value by integrating environmental and social objectives into every aspect of our operations.”

Since 2012, Linde has pursued a comprehensive sustainability framework addressing:

  • Climate change and resource scarcity
  • Human rights protection
  • Health and demographic shifts
  • Diversity and equal opportunities
  • Urbanisation

Linde’s commitment is independently verified by EcoVadis, where in 2023 Linde scored in the top 1% of companies globally, earning Platinum status across four areas: environment, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.
