Thirsty Camel Keeps Stock Flowing with the Right Equipment

Share

In a high-volume retail liquor operation, materials handling equipment isn't a nice-to-have, it's a core part of keeping the business running. For Thirsty Camel's Aveley site, where around 60 pallets arrive each week at an average of 1.2 tonnes each, and racking systems demand stacking up to three levels high, the bar for equipment performance is set firmly high.

James Turner, Retail Operations Manager, knows exactly what's at stake when equipment underperforms.

"We needed a unit that won't buckle under the load," he says. "It's not just about moving pallets; it's about handling weight, working within tight spaces and keeping everything flowing."

Confidence Built Across the Network

The path to Baoli began with experience at another site in the Thirsty Camel network, where the same equipment had already proven its worth.

"We already had the same unit at our Lakelands site, and it's been fantastic for us there," Turner explains. "When we looked at what was available in the market, Baoli stood out in terms of height, weight capacity and manoeuvrability."

With that track record already established, the decision for Aveley was straightforward. "It's the best unit we could ask for from a cost-benefit perspective," Turner adds.

The Right Tool for a Demanding Environment

Two models of the Baoli ER15 walkie stacker now handle the full range of daily tasks across the operation from unloading inbound deliveries to stacking pallets and loading vans for dispatch. One feature in particular has earned praise from the team on the floor.

"The side-shift function is a standout for the team," says Turner. "It makes handling loads easier and more efficient, especially in tighter areas."

Owning with Confidence

Rather than renting, Thirsty Camel opted to purchase their units outright, a decision grounded in long-term reliability.

"We prefer to own our units," Turner says. "You've got the warranty, and in our experience, they hold up better than previously used equipment."

Ongoing support from local Territory Manager Ken Bowers has reinforced that confidence. "Ken's been fantastic, and the service overall has been excellent. Any issues that have come up have been handled proactively."

For businesses weighing up their options, Turner's advice is direct: "Test it. Make sure it's fit for purpose. We had a site assessment done by Ken first, and that made the decision straightforward."
