From Rental to Reliable: DFC Packaging Transitions to Baoli Equipment

Running a busy warehouse across multiple packaging divisions requires equipment that can adapt to changing demands. When existing units no longer met those needs, one Victorian-based manufacturer began the search for a more reliable and fit-for-purpose solution.

Johan Hanekom, Storeman at DFC Packaging Group in Victoria, was tasked with finding new forklifts for the business as they were looking to move away from renting second-hand units and opting for a better long-term solution.

“I was given the task of finding new forklifts, and I considered a couple of brands. Looking at Linde Material Handling, I noticed the Baoli brand and inquired more about it.” The decision wasn’t made lightly, with a structured process of gathering information and presenting options internally. “We had been renting forklifts, but there was a plan for us to look at getting some newer ones, whether buying, renting or leasing.”

Today, DFC Packaging operates a mix of Baoli equipment suited to their application, including a KBR16 reach truck, a KBE25 lithium-ION counterbalance, and a 1.8 tonne lithium-ION unit on the way. “We have tight, narrow aisles with racking up to about seven metres –we needed something that could work within that space, put stock away and get stock out, which is why we opted for the Baoli reach truck. Some of the machinery we handle is fairly heavy, so we needed something with more capacity like the 2.5 tonne unit to lift it. And the 1.8 tonne will be more of a general unit, working in the aisles and for loading and unloading trucks.”

A key benefit for DFC Packaging has been the move to lithium-ION technology and its fast-charging capability. “I like the fact that we don’t have to charge the units overnight. If the battery’s running low, we can put it on charge for a bit and it’s ready to go again. I’ve had one fully charged in about two to two and a half hours, which is a bonus. You can keep operating without long downtime.”

From an operator perspective, the equipment has been easy to use. “The reach truck delivers smooth lifting performance, with a comfortable and controlled drive. I also like the camera on it, although I’m still getting used to using it.”

Safety features have also played a role in day-to-day operations. “It’s the first time we’ve had the warning lines setup on a forklift, so we’re still educating the staff to be aware of it, but it definitely helps. It makes it easier for both operators and personnel to see where the forklift is operating. And the BlueSpot on the KBE25 is also a great warning system, especially when reversing. It helps everyone in the warehouse stay aware.”

Other solutions fitted on the equipment includes digital weight gauges and fork positioners.

Throughout the process, support from the Baoli team was key to DFC Packaging. “Mia Whiteoak, Territory Manager at Baoli, was very professional, and her communication was great. Dealing with her was fantastic because she was able to provide each of the forklifts that we were looking at so we could trial them for a week. And that helped in making the decision as to which ones we go for and what additions we wanted on the forklifts because some of them didn't have weight scales or a camera. Those were added at a later stage, but it gave us a great opportunity to operate the forklifts and see how they performed in our warehouse.”

Overall, the transition to Baoli has provided a practical and reliable solution for the business. “We’re very happy with the equipment and the service so far. It’s working well for our operation.”
